Isaiah 5:20 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil. Fourth woe against those who confound the distinctions of right and wrong. Compare Romans 1:28, "even as they did not like х ouk (G3756) edokimasan (G1381),] to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind" х adokimon (G96) noun (G3563)]: "reprobate," Greek, indiscriminating; in just retribution the moral perception darkened.

That put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter. Sin is bitter (Jeremiah 2:19; Jeremiah 4:18; Acts 8:23; Romans 3:14; Hebrews 12:15), though it seem sweet for a time (Proverbs 9:17-18). Religion is sweet (Psalms 119:103).
