For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest ('hast given') me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me, х elabon (G2983) ... egnoosan (G1097) ... episteusan (G4100)] - 'they received them, and knew surely that I came out from Thee; and believed that Thou didst send Me;' referring doubtless to their own explicit declaration, but a little before, "Now are we sure" - `Now know we' - "that Thou knowest all things: by this we believe that Thou camest forth from God" (John 16:30). How benignant is this acknowledgment of the feeble faith of those infantile believers! Yet unless it had been genuine, and He had seen in it the germ of noblest faith afterward to be displayed, He had not so spoken of it.
