Lamentations 4:7 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire:

Her Nazarites - literally, separated ones (Numbers 6:1-27.) They were held once in the highest estimation, but now they are degraded. God's blessing formerly caused their body not to be the less fair and ruddy for their abstinence from strong drink. Compare the similar case of Daniel, etc. (Daniel 1:8-15.) Also David (1 Samuel 16:12; 1 Samuel 17:42). Type of Messiah (Song of Solomon 5:10).

Rubies. Gesenius translates [mipªniyniym], 'corals,' from a Hebrew root [paanan], to divide into branches, from the branching form of corals. This Hebrew root commonly means an angle. Maurer translates it, to turn, as expressing their globular form.

Their polishing was of sapphire - they were like exquisitely cut and polished sapphires. The "sapphires" may represent the blue veins of a healthy person.
