Luke 19:42 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

Saying, If thou hadst known - `But, alas! thou hast not.' This "If" is the most emphatic utterance of a wish for that which cannot be, or is not likely to be realized. (Compare Joshua 7:7, in Hebrew, and Job 16:4.)

Even thou. This may be joined to the preceding-`If even thou hadst known' х ei (G1487) egnoos (G1097) kai (G2532) su (G4771)]. There is deep and affecting emphasis on this "Thou:" - `Far as thou art gone, low as thou hast sunk, all but hopeless as thou art, yet if even thou hadst known!'

At least in this thy day - even at this most moving moment. See the note at Luke 13:9,

The things [which belong] unto thy peace! х ta (G3588) pros (G4314) eireeneen (G1515) sou (G4675)] - or, as Luther and Beza render it, 'which make for thy peace' (was zu deinem Frieden dienet-quoe ad pacem tuam faciunt). It has been thought, by Wetstein and others since, that there is some allusion here to the original name of the city - "Salem," meaning 'Peace' х shaalowm (H7965)].

But now they are hid from thine eyes. This was among His last open efforts to "gather" them, but their eyes were judicially closed. (See the notes at Matthew 13:13-14.)
