Luke 24:16 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

But their eyes were holden that they should not know him, х tou (G3588) mee (G3361) epignoonai (G1921)] - or 'did not recognize Him.' Certainly, as they did not believe that He was alive, His company, as a Fellow-traveler, was the last thing they would expect. But the words, "their eyes were holden," and the express intimation, in another Gospel, that "He appeared to them in another form" (Mark 16:12), make it evident that there was a divine operation hindering the recognition of Him until the fitting time.
