Psalms 35:2 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help.

Shield and buckler. The Hebrew means 'the small shield' х maageen (H4043)] and the 'large shield' respectively х tsinaah (H6793)] (cf. Psalms 5:12, note; 1 Kings 10:16-17). God promises, in Deuteronomy 32:41-42, that 'if He whet His glittering sword, and His hand take hold on judgment, He will render vengeance to His enemies.'

Stand up for mine help - `as mine help.' In this verse he sails on God to take hold of defensive weapons, to shield, not God, but the petitioner. In Psalms 35:3 offensive weapons also.
