Psalms 44:17 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant - though our calamities tempted us so to do. As in Malachi 3:14, some said, "It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it, that we have kept His ordinances, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?" The Hebrew for "covenant" х bªriyt (H1285)] is from a root 'to cut' х baarah (H1262), or baatar (H1334)], because the sacrifice was cut up in making it, and the contracting parties passed between the parts (Genesis 15:10; Genesis 15:17; Jeremiah 34:18-19).
