'The divine judgment upon ungodliness is one always realizing itself in the course of history, so that the ungodly can never be secure, but are continually in danger of a sudden overthrow (Hengstenberg). There is never a moment when God is not ready to punish the guilty. Long-suffering mercy alone, if haply the sinner will repent, stayeth the blow for a time.
