Much every way: chiefly, because, х prooton (G4412) men (G3303) gar (G1063) - see Donaldson, 618 - hoti (G3754)] - rather, 'First, that.' Our version here (following Beza) departs from this the proper meaning of the word, rendering it "chiefly," no doubt, because no 'second' and 'third' advantages of the Jew follow. But there was no need. It suited the apostle's argument to dwell on this particular advantage of the Jew, and the rest could easily be imagined.
That unto them were committed (or, 'they were entrusted with') the oracles of God, х ta (G3588) logia (G3051) tou (G3588) Theou (G2316)]. This remarkable expression which the Septuagint use in Numbers 24:4; Numbers 24:16; Psalms 12:6; Psalms 18:30), denoting 'divine communications' in general [theosfata], is transferred to the sacred Scriptures, to express their oracular, divinely authoritative character. In this sense Stephen, in his address before the Sanhedrim, calls them "the lively (or 'living') oracles" х logia (G3051) zoonta (G2198)] (Acts 7:38).
