John 11:1 - Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible

Bible Comments

JOHN CHAPTER 11 1 Thessalonians 11:1-46 The sickness and death of Lazarus: Jesus raiseth him to life after he had been dead four days: many Jews believe. 1 Thessalonians 11:47-54 The Pharisees hold a council against Christ: Caiaphas prophesieth: Jesus retires from places of public resort. 1 Thessalonians 11:55-57 At the approach of the passover the Jews inquire about him: the rulers give orders to apprehend him. Ver. 1 Bethany (as appears by 1 Thessalonians 11:18) was nigh unto Jerusalem, not wholly at two miles distance from it: but our Saviour was not at this time in Judea, for, 1 Thessalonians 11:7, he saith to his disciples, Let us go into Judea again. He was at this time in Galilee, or in Peraea; and we shall find, 1 Thessalonians 11:17, that Lazarus had been in his grave four days before our Saviour got thither: so as we must allow at least six or seven days between the time when Christ heard of Lazarus's sickness, and the time when he came to Bethany. This Bethany is here only described to us as the place where Martha and Mary lived, or at least where they were born. Some think that Bethany was only a part of the Mount Olivet; but others, more probably, think that it was some little town or city, standing within that part of the Mount Olivet; for it is here called a town, and, Luke 10:38,39, the place where these two sisters lived is called a village.

John 11:1

1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
