And this is the promise, &c.— OEcumenius thought, that και, and, was put for γαρ, for, οτι, because. It is evident, that the apostle here mentions the promise of eternal life as a motive to induce them to retain the true gospel, and remain faithful toChrist; as if he had said, "There is motive sufficient to induce you to remain true to Christ; for this is the promise which he hath promised to us that do so; even eternal life." To promise a promise was a common form of expression with the Greeks and Latins, as well as with the Hebrews. The promise is here put for the thing promised, as in other texts of scripture.
