According to the eternal purpose— Mr. Locke would render the Greek, According to that pre-disposition of the ages, or several dispensations which he made in Christ Jesus: which, by the pre-ordination of God's purpose, were all regulated and constituted in him: and Dr. Whitby, taking it in the same sense, explains it of Christ's being promised in the first age to Adam, typified in the second to the Jews, and in the last age preached to all the world.
