Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, &c.— The fifth crime imputed to the Jews is, an arrogant presumption of the stability of their state, founded in carnal reason, with a contempt of the divine wisdom, and of the faithful admonitions of the ministers of God. See Romans 11:25; Romans 12:16. This was remarkably the characteristic of the Pharisees in our Saviour's time. See Matthew 11:25 and John 9:39; John 9:41.
