And he said unto her, What form is he of?, х mah (H4100) taa'ªrow (H8389)] - What is his appearance?

An old man - seen to be so from his white Nazarite locks (1 Samuel 1:11; 1 Samuel 12:2).

And he is covered with a mantle, х mª`iyl (H4598)] - an exterior tunic, longer than the common, without sleeves, worn by persons of rank (1 Samuel 18:4; 1 Samuel 24:5; 1 Samuel 24:11), and especially by those engaged in the divine service (Exodus 28:31; Exodus 39:22; Leviticus 8:7). Josephus ('Antiquities,' b. 6:, ch. 14:, sec. 2) calls Samuel's dress 'a sacerdotal mantle' (cf. 1 Samuel 2:15; 1 Samuel 15:27).
