John 15:3 - Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

Bible Comments

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Now ye are clean through the word, х Eedee (G2235) humeis (G5210) katharoi (G2513) este (G1510) dia (G1223) ton (G3588) logon (G3056), 'Already are ye clean by reason of the word'] which I have spoken unto you. He had already said of the Eleven, using another figure, that they were "clean," and "needed only to wash their feet." Here He repeats this, reminding them of the means by which this was brought about - "the word which He had spoken to them." For "as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God." He "purified their hearts by faith," and "sanctified them through His truths; His word was the truth." (See the note at John 17:17.) Such, then, being their state, what would He have them to do?
