Isaiah 35:1,2 - Coke's Commentary on the Holy Bible

Bible Comments

The wilderness, &c.— There can be no doubt of the connection of this chapter with that preceding. Comp. Isaiah 35:4 with Isaiah 35:8 in that chapter. The most joyful, prosperous, and glorious things are here predicted, concerning the state of the church after the judgment upon Edom, in such figurative terms as are familiar with our prophet, and are easily understood. We have had occasion heretofore to observe, that by the wilderness is generally meant the Gentile church; the present prophesy, therefore, is a full and clear prediction of the effects of evangelical grace upon the unfruitful desart of the Gentile world. Vitringa is of opinion, that some future and very glorious state of the church is here foretold. See Bishop Lowth's 20th Prelection, a fine critique on this and the preceding chapter.

Isaiah 35:1-2

1 The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

2 It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the LORD, and the excellency of our God.
